What To Expect As A Graphic Design Student

Be Prepared To Spend

Entering graphic design may be expected as expensive. A lot of students entering college expect visual and communicative arts through computers and such things as Adobe products. Don't expect the least! A graphic design student is not just sitting at a computer and having your professors help you when you have a problem. One major part of becoming a design student: Fine Arts. Painting, drawing, creation, imagination becomes a large contribution towards a degree. With these things comes cost. Drawing, design, and painting classes can be the most expensive studio classes an art student can take. Depending on how many classes you are meant to sign up for, these classes combined may cost somewhere in the hundreds of dollars, even thousands. Of course not many students spend in the thousands for art supplies. Smart spending, coupons, discounts, anything you can get your hands on can save you a ton of money.

How To Prepare

If possible, take this into consideration, because it can help you. First of all, if you are planning on becoming a design student, a laptop is very important. Depending on what type of person you are, you will be choosing between a PC or a MAC. I'm not going into specifics, but I would recommend doing research on both and also keeping in mind your budget. PC's may be cheaper, but MAC's have a greater definition(which is why it's a favorite for designers).

Literature will become your friend as you go on. There is a wide selection of graphic design books in numerous bookstores that can help self-learning. Books by Ellen Lupton are always a great read and any books referencing typography and colors are wonderful to keep on hand. Another thing to prepare would be Adobe products. Photoshop, Illustrator, etc..., these products have become very expensive and can range more than $700 each. If you already have an Adobe Suite then you are set and should probably start self-teaching yourself how to use them. If you don't have an Adobe Suite, DO NOT go out and buy it. Wait until you are actually in college. Why? There is a magical thing you receive and that would be your college I.D. With minimal research, local colleges or other places offer these Adobe Suites that contain multiple products for much lower prices. I went to a local college and bought my Adobe Suite for about $260. Once again, this is an example on how you can save money.

Don't Be Afraid

Don't think that this is going to be all work and no play. Interact with your professors and peers and I'm sure you'll find comfort in your classes. Have fun and don't be afraid to express yourself, especially in your art. Teachers search for that one student that is different from the rest, and it can pay off with multiple opportunities with being put into a gallery or jobs in your area.
